Vigna Mungo
Vigna mungo, theĀ black gram,Ā urad bean,Ā minapa pappu,Ā mungo beanĀ orĀ blackĀ matpeĀ beanĀ (mÄį¹£a) is aĀ beanĀ grown in theĀ IndianĀ subcontinent. Like its relative, theĀ mungĀ bean, it has been reclassified from theĀ PhaselousĀ to theĀ VignaĀ genus. The product sold asĀ black lentilis usually the whole urad bean, whereas the split bean (the interior being white) is calledĀ white lentil. It should not be confused with the much smaller true blackĀ lentilĀ (Lens culinaris).
Black gram originated inĀ India, where it has been in cultivation from ancient times and is one of the most highly prizedĀ pulsesĀ of India andĀ Pakistan. It is very widely used inĀ PunjabiĀ cuisineĀ and is often referred to asĀ maah di daalĀ in the native language by Punjabis.
It is an erect, suberect or trailing, densely hairy, annual bush. The tap root produces a branched root system with smooth, rounded nodules. The pods are narrow, cylindrical and up to sixĀ cm long. The plant grows 30ā100Ā cm with large hairy leaves and 4ā6Ā cm seed pods.
